Accelerated mobile pages: Next step to content delivery

19 Oct 2016

In October 2016, Google announced Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP), a very accessible framework for creating fast-loading mobile web pages. It is an open-source initiative, to enable publishers to easily improve speed for their mobile readership. AMP boosts up the delivery of web pages by enforcing a highly specific and limited set of technologies that can be included in webpages.

AMP framework has been adopted by hundreds of websites and is being incorporated into leading software platforms, including Twitter, WordPress, Drupal, Facebook, eBay, Pinterest, and by analytics providers Parse.ly, Chartbeat, and Adobe.you will have to maintain at least two versions of any article page: The original version of your article page that users will typically see, and the AMP version of that page.

AMP consists of three basic parts:

AMP HTML: This markup language has some custom tags and properties and many restrictions.   For more details, check out AMP Projects list of required markup.
AMP JS: A JavaScript framework for mobile pages.
AMP CDN: An optional Content Delivery Network.

Often this AMP gets compared with Facebook Instant Articles which is a mobile optimized html5 document for mobile users, visible for readers reading articles on Facebooks mobile app (iOS or Android). It allows publishers to host their content on Facebook (apart from the publishers own website).

AMP makes it easier for publishers, but also advertisers, to deliver more resource-intensive content such as video, image carousels and plug-ins by substantially reducing the amount of bandwidth needed to deliver such content. The AMP open source approach makes it easier for publishers to deliver more resource-intensive content, such as video, image carousels and plug-ins by reducing substantially the amount of bandwidth needed to deliver such content.
